Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899 – 1902 with campaign bars CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE & TRANSVAAL. Impressed named to: 248 PTE M. CURTIS, QUENSLAND I.B. Mounted as worn. Matthew Curtis served in South Africa with the 5th contingent of the Queensland Imperial Bushmen. They numbered 500, with a cyclist section, was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel J F Flewell-Smith. They sailed on the Templemore on 6th March 1901, and arrived in South Africa in the beginning of April. They at once took the field. They saw action in and around Cape Colony under General Plumer, with notable actions at Kopjesfontein, Caledon River & especially at Onverwachte where the 5th suffered 12 killed and 20 wounded.
