Queens South Africa Medal 1899 – 1902 WITH 5 clasps, Impressed named 4974 PTE J.W. SCOTT. 2ND DRGN. GDS: Comes with copies service papers and medal rolls. John Walter Scott was born in 1881 at Deptford, London, he enlisted with the 2nd Dragoon Guards on the 20/11/1899 at York. He served in England until 15/11/01 when the Regiment was deployed to South Africa for the Boer War, they arrived at Capetown on 6 December 1901 with an effective strength of 24 officers and 513 men. The men were issued with rifles and bayonets instead of the carbines they had been used to, and handed in their swords, so it wasn’t until January 1902 that they began their campaigning. The casualties for the war were: Two officers and 78 other ranks killed, 14 died of disease. Four officers and 51 other ranks were wounded. They had arrived in South Africa with 775 horse and lost nearly all of them, 748 throughout the campaign. On the 1/4/1903 he was sentenced to 56 days imprisonment for striking a superior officer. Whilst the Regiment served in South Africa until 1908, Pte Scott returned to England on the 11/2/1905 to be discharged to the reserve on the 16/2/1905 in which he served for a further 6 years. It is possible that he also served in WW1.
