A group of 6 medals to Lt. Colonel John Rudolph Whitaker, who earned a rare M.I.D. in the far east, whilst serving with the Indian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, as part of the 23rd Indian Division

1939 ? 45 Star, Burma Star, British Defence and War Medal (1939- 45), with Mention in Dispatches device, all un named as issued, General Service Medal (1918 – 62), with clasp S.E. ASIA 1945 – 46, impressed named MAJOR J.R WHITAKER. R.E.M.E.; Indian Independence Medal 1947, un named as issued. Medals in exceptional condition and are swing mounted as worn. Comes with copies of The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment discharge book, medal roll, London Gazette extracts.

Lt Colonel John Rudolph Whitaker was born at Forest Hill, London in 1905. He enlisted in The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 8/7/1940 (service number 6100845) posted to 168 O.C.T.U. 23/8/1940 and was commissioned into the Royal Irish Fusiliers in January 1941 (new service number 162691). He transferred to the Roya Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was posted to the Indian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Whitaker saw service in Burma and the Dutch East Indies (Java 11/10/1945 – 30/8/1946) with the 38 & 61 Infantry Workshop Companies, Indian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (IEME), 23^rd Indian Division. Promoted honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1953, he died on 19 May 1969.
