M.I.D. London Gazette 14/6/1918.

He was awarded a Mentioned in Dispatches for his work in railway construction in Egypt a most unusual award to a member of the Light Horse, whose M.I.D. awards during the war were already rather scarce.

Sergeant Arthur Gordon Rowe was born in 1885 at Daylesford, Victoria. He was working as a labourer when he enlisted on 7/10/1914 into the 9th Light Horse ‘C’ Squadron (service # 480). He embarked with the regiment bound for the Egypt on 11/2/1915 arriving on 14/3/1915. The 9th L.H.R. as part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade landed in late May 1915 at Gallipoli. The 9th was fortunate to be the reserve regiment for the Brigade's disastrous attack on the Nek on 7 August, but subsequently suffered 50 per cent casualties attacking Hill 60 on 27 August. Exhausted and under-strength, the 9th then played a defensive role until it finally left the peninsula on 20 December 1915. His records as is usual are scanty about his actual movements from leaving Australia with the 1st entry dated 20/11/1915 at Heliopolis, ‘taken on strength 10 L.H.R’.

He was posted to the 9th L.H.R. on 18/1/1916 serving with them until attending a railway construction works course of instruction on 21/8/17, with the 115th Company R.E. Promoted Temporary Sergeant 10/4/1918 – 29/6/1918. He remained with the Royal Engineers until 11/9/18 when he was returned to the 9th L.H. He returned to Australia on 29/4/1919 for discharge with the silver war badge on 20/9/1919. He died in 1962 in Cheltenham, Victoria.
