Bertie Golland was born in 1892 at Quirindi, N.S.W. A labourer by trade he enlisted at Holsworthy on 17/8/1915 and was posted to the 12th Reinforcements 1st Light Horse. He embarked on 9/11/15 bound for Egypt landing in time to qualify for the 1914/15 Star. He marched into the 1st Light Horse on 14/1/1916 and served with them until discharging in 1919. His service records notes ‘Proceeds to join West F Force’ (Western Frontier Force) on 14/1/1916. He served his entire time in the Middle East until being granted leave to England on 28/3/1919. Departing England on 31/5/1919, bound for Australia to discharge on 5/9/1919. He died on 21/11/1945 in Wallabadah, N.S.W. The 1st Light Horse (1st Light Horse Brigade) Battle honours for Middle East include Egypt (1915 – 17), El Mughar, Gaza – Beersheba, Jaffa, Jericho, Jerusalem, Jordan (Amman), Jordan (Es Salt), Magdhaba-Rafah, Megiddo, Nablus, Nebi Samwil, Palestine (1917-18) and Rumani.
