Offered is an original WW1 era German S98/05 Mauser sawback (removed) 'Butcher' bayonet & scabbard by Simson & Co of Suhl.
Bayonet features steel fittings overall, with Waffen stamps to birds head pommel with working external release button, screw-in wooden grips and metal guard. The 36.5 cm long swollen steel blade shows some field sharpening to blade edge, cleaned with some light staining, with blade being in generally good condition overall, being issued stamped for 1916. The sawback edge has been period removed, (most were removed by the German soldiers - especially given the retribution from allied soldiers, if they were caught with weapons with the saw back edge present). Ricasso maker stamped for Simson & Co, Suh. Standard metal scabbard, in very good original shape, with period dark brown finish and Waffen stamps to throat. The blade fits well into the scabbard. Overall length: 52cm.
The bayonet was designed for use with the 7.92 mm Gewehr 98 bolt action Mauser Rifle, being one of the main service rifles of the German Army pre and post-WW1.
