The Medal was instituted on 21 November 1941 with versions for frontline combatant soldiers, as in this example, for frontline non-combatant soldiers (without swords) and for home defence (without words or wreath). The medal was awarded to both Hungarian and German soldiers and this example would have been awarded in 1941 for a minimum of 3 months service in front-line combat. The medal is increasingly hard to find.
