Description

Offered is an original General Service Medal 1962-2007, with clasp Northern Ireland & RAF Long Service & Good Conduct Medal to Corporal Styles, who served in Northern Ireland with the Royal Air Force.

General Service Medal 1962-2007, silver, 36mm circular medal with ornate scrolled ribbon suspension bar with ‘NORTHERN IRELAND’ clasp; the face with the crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith); the reverse inscribed centrally ‘FOR CAMPAIGN SERVICE’, a Tudor crown above, all within an oak wreath; attributed on the edge to LAC.G.P. STYLES (R8085037) RAF.

RAF LS & GC Medal, silver, 36mm wide on claw and scroll suspension; the face with the laurel-crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ‘+ ELIZABETH • II • DEI • GRATIA • REGINA • F: D:’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith); the reverse with the insignia of the Royal Air Force, being an eagle with outstretched wings, a Tudor crown above, circumscribed ‘FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT’; impressed named CPL. G P STYLES (R8085037) RAF.

The General Service Medal was instituted in 1964 and awarded for participation in conflicts between 1962 and 2007 where a separate campaign medal was not issued. The Northern Ireland clasp was instituted for award to personnel involved in the various operations in Northern Ireland during ‘The Troubles’.The qualifying period is a minimum of 30 days’ service between 14 August 1969 and 31 July 2007. The 30 days’ did not have to be consecutive. Should the qualifying period be cut short due to injury or death, then the completed days are counted as sufficient for the award of this clasp.

The Royal Air Force Long Service & Good Conduct Medal was instituted on 1 July 1919 and awarded for 18 years’ exemplary service (reduced to 15 years in 1977). This example dates from after the accession of Queen Elizabeth in 1953 but before the introduction of the portrait of the Queen wearing the St. Edward crown in 1980.
