Thomas Horton was born in 1882 and attested for the South Wales Borderers. He served with the 8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from when his battalion first arrived in France on 5 September 1915. After a short period in the front lines N.E. of Albert, this new battalion was sent as part of XII Corps to the Balkans, arriving in Salonika in mid November 1915. Sergeant Horton was admitted to the 28th General Hospital in Salonika with dysentery in June 1916 and later in September 1918, at a time when his battalion was involved in the Third Battle of Doiran, he was admitted to the same hospital with gun shot wounds to the left thigh and left buttock. He was transferred to the Hospital Ship Glengorm Castle on 8 November 1918 and was finally discharged to the reserve on 5 March 1919.
