Thomas Boraston was born at Windsor Green, Warwick in 1872. A gas plugger by trade, he enlisted with the 1st Battalion Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry 12/8/1891 at Bodmin. He served in India 20/2/1893 - 2/3/1899. During this time he participated in the Tira campaign earning the I.G.S.M with clasps Punjab Frontier 1897 - 98 and Tirah 1897 - 98.
Upon returning home, he transferred to the Army Reserve 5/3/1899. Recalled for the Boer War 9/10/1899, he served in South Africa 5/11/1899 - 4/12/1901 with the 2nd Battalion D.C.L.I.
During the Boer War the Battalion saw hard service. On returning home he was re transferred to the Army Reserve 28/10/1902. He enlisted into Section 'D' Reserve serving with them 18/8/1903 - 17/8/1907.
