Chief Stoker John Fountain was born on the 2/4/1890 in Leighton, Buzzard. A stoker by trade he enlisted into the Royal Navy on the 7/9/1908. He served on a variety of H.M ship and shore stations including: Nelson, Latona (Submarine depot ship), Drake, Victory II, Hecla (torpedo boat carrier/depot ship), Topaze, Minerva (taking part in the rescue attempts when the submarine HMS B2 was sunk in a collision in October 1912) 1/8/12/ -28/8/13, Dido (depot ship) Doris.
During WW1 he served aboard Tamar (Royal Navy's base in Hong Kong) on torpedo boat 38 and 35, 4/8/1914 ? 10/8/1917. Vernon (Torpedo boat 116) based in Portsmouth 21/11/1917 - 31/3/1918, Victory X (accounts base) for T.B 116 1/4/1918 - 26/10/1918, PC 73 (P class patrol boat) 8/11/18 - 14/12/18.
Post war he served PC 59 (low silhouette for U-boat hunting, twin screws, hardened steel ram bows, Local Defence Flotilla or Portsmouth Escort Force) Argus (aircraft carrier) Flinders (survey ship) Egmont (shore base Malta), Cormorant (Gibraltar).
Promoted chief Stoker 28/4/1926, pensioned 6/9/1930 and recalled 25/9/1938. Probably served WW2.
