These patriotic badges were presented to women during WW1 in Germany who gave gold and precious jewels to the German trasury for the continuation of the war effort. In exchange for a sum of precious metals or jewellery, badges such as these were exchanged and worn with great pride. Early in the war, it was seen as a patriotic duty to support the war effort in this way, with many fashionable and wealthy citizens wearing these 'patriotic' badges as something of a patriotic status symbol.
