Offered is an original WW1 French Escapees Medal. 29mm wide circular gilt bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball for ribbon suspension; the face with a female head and shoulders crowned with laurel and oak leaves facing left, representing the French Republic and circumscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE’; the reverse inscribed ‘MÉDAILLE DES ÉVADÉS’ encircled by a wreath of oak leaves; on probably original ribbon. The medal was established on 20 August 1926 and has been awarded to prisoners of war who escaped during the wars of 1870-1871, 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 and to soldiers of French origin from the Alsace-Lorraine region who escaped from...

The medal was established on 20 August 1926 and has been awarded to prisoners of war who escaped during the wars of 1870-1871, 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 and to soldiers of French origin from the Alsace-Lorraine region who escaped from service in the German army in 1914-18 to join the French. A very good example.
