Sergeant Mechanic Ernest Jones was born in 1879 in Manchester. He appears on the 1911 census as self-employed joiner, making showcases. He enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps as an airman on 20/3/1917. He served in France from 17/5/1917 – 23/3/1920 being promoted to Sergeant on 1/9/1918. It would appear that he served with 100 Squadron who were a night bombing unit equipped with F.E.2Bs and B.E.2es. The squadron converted to Handley Page 0/400 bombers in 1918. No doubt the award of the M.S.M. was for his work maintaining the squadrons planes in trying times. He discharged on 30/4/1920.
