WW1 BRITISH ARMY 1914 STAR MEDAL GROUP CAPTAIN BENNETT 5TH SCOTTISH RIFLES 3 TIMES WOUNDED

Offered is an original set of full size & miniature medals, as awarded to Captain Reginald Bennett, who as a pre war Territorial N.C.O., rose through the ranks to Captain and was three times wounded during the course of the First World War.

1914 Star with clasp 5^th Aug-22^nd NOV1914 Impressed named 6338 L.C^PL R.U.BENNETT. 5/SCO.RIF. War and Victory Medal impressed named CAPT.R.U.BENNETT. With 1914 Star and clasp trio miniatures (Victory detatched from ribbon mount). All period swing mounted. Comes with a swathe of research, including copies medal index card, medal rolls, service papers, war diary & research.

Reginald Urban Bennett born 31/3/1892. Hackney Middlesex England. Enlisted 19/2/1912 at Glasgow to the 5^th Battalion Scottish Rifles. Regimental number 6338. Occupation ‘Civil Servant Commissioner of Customs and Exercise. Brigade camps 1912 & 13. Embodied 5/8/1914. Landed France 4/11/14. Lcpl 3/10/14. Cpl 4/3/15. Sgt 22/10/15. 5^th Battalion was at Loos. Commissioned 12/12/1915 and served with the 13^th Battalion, Cheshire Regt.

Wounded in Action 6/7/1916 (6^th or 16^th ?) At Oviliers Somme. 16/7/1916 GSW Thigh Right. No 3 Casualty Clearing Station. 13th Battalion. 7/7/1916 Attack at La Boiselle Casualties 18 Officers 243 ORS. 7 January 1918 Extract from war diary of 1st Bn, Lieut R.U. BENNETT took over 2nd in Command of “B” Coy. 26/4/1918 Gas poisoning sent to 51 CCS. 1st Battalion.

Extract from war diary of 1st Bn:Trenches. On the morning of the 28th Sept, the 15th Infy Bde moved to the right of the Divisional front, and at 5-15 p.m. advanced without a barrage to the railway on the left of GOUZEACOURT. “A” Coy, Commanded by Capt R.W. MILLS, was on the left; “C” Coy, Commanded by Capt R.U. BENNETT on the right; with “B” Coy (Lieut G.B. LOCKETT) and “D” Coy (Capt T. GROARKE) in Support. 1st NORFOLKS were on the right; 1st BEDFORDS and 16th WARWICKS in Support. Machine Gun opposition was encountered from the railway and the hill opposite. During the night of 28th / 29th, the Bn held a line just in advance of the railway. They were in touch with 1st DEVONS on the left and 1st NORFOLKS on the right. 28/9/1918 GSW Right forearm, compound fracture.

1939 Census records him as married Army Pensioner living at Red Cross Hospital Manor Hill, Birkenhead C.B., Cheshire, England. Died 1984 Surrey South Eastern.

A fine original medal group to a pre war Territorial soldier who saw some hard fighting. Commissioned from the ranks and wounded in action 3 times. The 5^th Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) were one of the 1^st Territorial units to be sent to France. Rare to get a 1914 Star and clasp to a Territorial unit.
