HMAS Tingira (see inset photo/boys parading) 21/6/1912 – 30/6/1913; Fitted out as a boy’s training ship at Mort’s Dock Balmain. Commissioned into the RAN as HMAS Tingira on 25 April 1912. Tingira became a well-known sight in Sydney harbour at her permanent mooring in Rose Bay. There she was supported by shore facilities in Kent Hall on New South Head Road. Nearby Lyne Park was also used for the purpose of parade, rifle and field gun training.

HMAS Penguin 1/7/1913 – 21/6/1915. HMAS Encounter 22/6/1915 – 21/1/1916. HMAS Penguin 22/1/1916 – 20/7/1916. HMAS Tingira 21/7/1916 – 20/6/1917 (Shore time expired).

A nice piece of early Royal Australian Navy history. Chief Stoker Hewett after long service in the R.N transferred to the fledgling R.A.N. as an ‘old sweat’ to train new recruits, having served nearly 30 years before being pensioned.
