Private Edward Jackson died in South Africa 14/2/1917 as a result of a ‘liver abscess following dysentery’ and is buried in his hometown of Port Elizabeth. At the time he was serving with the 2nd Regiment South African Infantry Brigade (2nd Regiment from Natal and the Orange Free State) and could have been a casualty from France sent home. His widow Ellen Mary Jackson was born 6/4/1865 and it is probable that Edward was of the same vintage and may have fought in the Boer War as most of the initial recruits had previous military experience.
