James Allen Stephen
was born on the 7/8/1890 at 12 Main St Pollokshaws, Glasgow. He enlisted at Glasgow and it is possible that he was a pre-war territorial serving with the 1
st
Lowland Field Company as his original service number was 75. In 1917 the T/A was re-numbered and he was given the new service number 400553.
He was married on the 29 Jun 1916 at the Parish Church Hall, Kilwinning to Catherine McDonald in Glasgow. His occupation was recorded as ‘Joiner’ (Sapper Royal Engineers) His widows pension card records ‘married after enlistment’. He was serving with the 409
th
 Field Company, 1
st
Division when he died of wounds at Pernes (probably at either the 6
th
 or 22
nd
Casualty Clearing Station) on the 27/6/1918. It is probable that they were received within 1 – 2 days prior.
He is buried in the Pernes British Cemetery.
