Offered is an original Republic of Finland Medal of Liberty, 1st Class,1918 by Sporrong of Stockholm
29mm wide circular silver medal with eyelet and original ring for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned lion of Finland holding a sword, with two white roses of Finland and inscribed ‘URHEUDESTA FÖR TAPPERHET’ ('For bravery' in Finnish and in Swedish); the reverse inscribed ‘SUOMEN KANSALTA’ (From the Finnish People) and dated ‘1918’ within a circular laurel wreath, maker's mark 'S&Co' for Sporrong & Co, City of Stockholm assay mark, ‘Q7’ (1918) date stamp and ‘'S’ silver control stamp at the base; on the original unmounted ribbon.
The Cross of Liberty was established on 4 March 1918 and was made by Sporrong & Co, founded in Sweden in 1666, and a foremost maker of orders and medals, not least for Finland. This example would have been awarded for an act of military bravery during the Liberation War.
