Offered is an original WW1 era Germany, Prussia, House Order of Hohenzollern, commander grade. 43mm wide, silver and enamel, excellent finish to eagle and bandau. Unmarked suspension ring and length of ribbon.

The Order was instituted on 5 December 1841 by Prince Konstantin of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to be awarded for service to the Princely House. The two Principalities were annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia on 23 August 1851 but continued to award the Princely House Order whilst Prussia, whose king was also a Hohenzollern, also adopted the Order and named theirs the Royal (Königlich) House Order to distinguish it. The present example is of the second version, awarded from 1863 to 1918. The Order was a House Order rather than a state order and thus might have been awarded by the Prussian Hohenzollerns after their abdication in November 1918 at the end of World War I but in practice it fell into abeyance. The Member’s Eagle was always awarded sparingly and is not often found. A superb example.
