Offered is an 1889 pattern German Officer's sword and scabbard, that was brought back as a souvenir by Lieutenant William Abbott, who served with the 30th Battalion, A.I.F. during WW1.

1889 Pattern Officer’s wartime ‘ersatz’ model, with black painted steel fittings overall, including back-strap and doves-head pommel, with wire wrapped black celluloid grip, showing light use and patina overall. The single fullered slightly curved 82cm nickel plated blade is in very fine condition, with very little if any noticeable wear. The blade shows the E Pack & Sohne Solingen maker mark underneath the langet. The blade fits smoothly into the black finished service scabbard, retaining it’s floating suspension ring. Overall length of sword and scabbard 102cm.

With the sword will come the brief details paperwork relating to the listing details and Lt. Abbott (see below).

This sword, as well as the medals and accoutrements (medals & photo shown in last photo not included – only for display) came direct from the family of Lieutenant William Abbot, who won the Military Medal in 1918 for actions at Villers-Bretonneux. We bought these items in our Perth shop, with this sword being one of the items that his granddaughter told us Abbott took from a German officer during the war. We see very few items coming direct from families these days, so this is a rare chance to acquire a nice souvenir piece with actual provenance, a rare thing to see these days amongst listings found here!
