Donald McLarty, was born 8/7/874 at Greenock, Scotland. Enlisted for service 25/3/1897 in the Royal Navy for period of 12 years, rising in rank from Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class to Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class. He served in various postings then joined the Royal Australian Navy 1/3/1913 as part of the Royal Navy element of the commissioning crew for H.M.A.S. Sydney, serving aboard her from 27/6/1913 to 19/7/1919. He took part in operations in German New Guinea 11/9/1914 and then the Sydney-Emden action 9/11/1914; Paid Emden Prize Bounty; Returned to Royal Navy at London Depot 20/7/1919 to 24/12/1919.
