Thomas Avis was born in Born Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 1875, a labourer by trade, he was serving in the 3rd Suffolk Regiment (Militia) when he enlisted into the regular Army 5/4/1895 with the 1st Battalion Suffolk’s (service number 4199). Thomas Avis was born in Born Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 1875, a labourer by trade, he was serving in the 3rd Suffolk Regiment (Militia) when he enlisted into the regular Army 5/4/1895 with the 1st Battalion Suffolk’s (service number 4199). He was posted to the 2nd Battalion 15/2/1898 and transferred to the Military Foot Police 24/3/1910 (new service number 1081).

He served home and abroad including: Malta 10/4/1897 – 14/2/1898. India 15/2/98 – 27/12/07.

On transferring to the M.F.P he was promoted to Lance Corporal, Acting Corporal 6/8/1916 and Acting Sergeant 25/10/16 but reverted to L/Cpl for discharge 4/4/1917.

WW1: His 21 years’ service was up on 5/4/1016, however he extended for a further year which he served in Alexandria 29/2/1916 – 12/2/1917. He was discharged on 4/4/1917 with 22 years’ service.

He was granted his L.S. & G.C. Medal with gratuity and is also entitled to the British War and Victory Medals 1914 – 18.
