Offered is a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (G.V), impressed named 623 SJT. T. ASTILL. M.F.P. Comes with copy service record, M.I.C., medal rolls and 1939 census.
Sergeant Thomas Clarence Astill, was born 10/4/1877 in Leamington, Warwickshire. A labourer by trade he was already serving in the Militia with the 3rd Royal Warwickshire Regiment when he joined the regulars with the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regt on 20/8/1894 (service number 4327). Posted to the 2nd Battalion 4/2/99, 4th Battalion 1/2/1900, 13/2/1900 promoted Lance Corporal. Posted Military Foot Police 1/2/1901 as Pte (service number 623). Promoted Corporal 1/4/1907 and Sergeant 10/2/1911.
Served: Malta 6/11/95 – 20/1/97 & Egypt 21/1/97 – 3/2/99. With the R. Warwickshire Regiment.
Served with the Military Police: Gibraltar 19/4/07 – 23/11/09. Havre France 21/11/14 – 22/11/14 (did not qualify for the 1914 Star as it was only an overnight visit). France 12/4/1917 – 22/10/1917.
Received a severe reprimand 23/9/1917 when: ‘A prisoner in his charge was found in possession of a cigarette’
Home 23/10/1917 - 2/1/1918 & discharged no longer physically fit, with silver war badge.
The 1939 census records him as living in Portsmouth as a retired army pensioner. Died 10/8/1942 Portsmouth.
Astill is also entitled to the Queens Sudan Medal 1899, the Khedive's Sudan Medal with clasps The Atbara, Khartoum. The British War and Victory Medals 1914 – 18 and the silver war badge. His GC & LS Medal came with a gratuity 8/11/1916.
