Harold Erson Spence was born 28/12/1881 in Lancashire. A grocers assistant by trade and a small man of 5 ft 2 inches tall, he enlisted into the Army 22/1/1916 and served with the Army Service Corps. He initially served in France with the A.S.C. Expeditionary Forces Canteens; from his records it is unclear as to when he initially landed but he briefly served with the Gloucestershire Regiment 17/10/1917 – 23/12/1917 until he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps 24/12/1917. He served in France with the R.A.F until 21/4/19 then England and discharging 30/4/1920. Post war he continued to work as a Canteen Manager in Singapore. He died Torbay, Devon 1972.
