Chief Stoker Aubrey Brown was born at High Wycombe on 20/12/1896. He was working as a gardener when he enlisted into the Royal Navy 28/12/ 1914. He served on H.M.S Forward (scout cruiser) from 3/6/1915 -20/7/ 1918. H.M.S Forward in 1915 she was one of five of the seven surviving scout cruisers to make up the 6th Light Cruiser Squadron, whose duties were to guard the east coast against Zeppelin raids. Forward was sent to the Mediterranean from July 1916 to the end of the war she served in the Aegean with her sister Foresight. Post war he served on a variety of H.M. ships including: Starfish (destroyer), Sandhurst (depot ship), Marlborough (Iron Duke-class battleship), Repulse (Renown-class battlecruiser), Ark Royal (seaplane carrier) Brown was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 18 March 1930, the Jubilee Medal of 1935 and was shore pensioned on 27 December 1936.
WW2: Recalled 21/8/1939 he served at H.M.S. Badger at Harwich (shore base for submarines and the Coastal Forces). He moved onto Beehive, the Coastal Forces shore base from 1 July 1940, Rooke from 7 August 1940 and also Kestrel. Having been advanced Chief Stoker, he was released on 5 October 1945.
