He served on a variety of H.M. ship and shore bases including: Impregnable, Agincourt, Boscawen,?H.M.S. Mars (pre-dreadnought battleship) 30/4/1899 ? 16/8/1905. 1902 an accident with her forward main battery killed eleven men and badly damaged the turret.?Victory I (accounts base), Jupiter, Vernon (Torpedo school),?H.M.S Mercury?(the 1878 Iris Class Cruiser was a Portsmouth Submarine Depot Ship in 1908. The hulk HMS Dolphin along with the hulk HMS Mercury were berthed in Haslar Creek acting, with the shore accommodation of Fort Blockhouse, as the ports submarine base.
