Robert Currie was born in Melbourne on 7/11/1894. A small man (5’4” tall), he joined the Royal Australian Navy on 26/2/1913 and was given the service number 2714. At the outbreak of the war, he was serving on H.M.A.S. Melbourne on which he served from 23/4/1913 – 1/2/1916. The Melbourne landed a naval party on Nauru Island to carry out the destruction of the wireless station on 9/9/1914. Posted to the London Depot 2/2/16 – 23/6/16 then to H.M.A.S. Cerberus until 1/12/1916. He served the remainder of the war on H.M.A.S. Brisbane. Between December 1918 and January 1919, the Brisbane sailed through the Dardanelles to the Sea of Marmara, and into the Black Sea as part of the British force that operated off Sebastopol and Smyrna (a show of force to support White Russian forces engaged in fighting the Bolsheviks). 8/9/1919 posted to H.M.A.S. Australia. 15/1/1920 posted to H.M.A.S. Cerberus and discharged on 2/2/1920.
