Description
Offered is a 1914 – 15 Star, impressed named LIEUT. P.E.U. TOWNSHEND. R.N.; British War and Victory Medals (1914 – 18), impressed named LT. COMMR. P.E.U. TOWNSHEND. R.N.; British War and Defence Medals (1939 – 45) un named as issued, court mounted for display. Comes with copies of: Service record, seniority list, London Gazette and medal roll.
Commander Philip Ernest Uniacke Townshend
was born on the 16/12/1885 at Dublin, he entered the Royal Navy 15/5/1901 as a cadet on the Britannia. He was promoted to Sub Lieutenant 30/9/1905, Lieutenant 30/9/1907 and Lt Commander 30/9/1915.
He served on the following ships and shore bases: Vengeance (pre-dreadnought battleship), Midshipman on the Barfleur (Centurion-class pre-dreadnought battleship), Cornwallis (Duncan-class pre-dreadnought battleship), Queen (London class of pre-dreadnought battleship), Zealandia (King Edward VII-class battleship) was in the Med for the First Balkan War as part of an international blockade of Montenegro.
WW1: August 1914 – 12/9/1914 to Vivid (training base) for Opossum (A class destroyer).
13/9/1914 – 21/12/1915 to Tyne for torpedo duties with torpedo boat’s. Lent to Aquarius (Destroyer tender) & Peregrine (Destroyer) for a period.
22/12/15 – 10/9/16 H.M.S Patrol (Pathfinder-class scout cruiser) Torpedo duties in (?) flotilla.
11/9/16 – 7/11/18 H.M.S Sandhurst (Fleet repair ship) for Torpedo duties with the 15
th
Flotilla (Submarines)
Post war: Parker (Destroyer), Campbell (Admiralty type flotilla leader), President for instructor duties in torpedoes, Veron.
Placed on retired list at own request 15/6/1927 with rank of Commander.
WW2: H,M.S Drake 25/8/1939 – . R.N list show 1940 Commander serving in the Admirals Office, 1942 working in the Book production department.
Died 1959 Caton, Lancashire.
