A WW1 1827 pattern King George V era Royal Navy officer’s sword & scabbard attributed to Sir Hugh Trevor Dawson, 2nd Baronet of Edgewarebury. Gilt lion’s head pommel, with maine backstrap, 'white' faux economy ray skin grip with wire wrap and gilt brass guard, showing the fouled anchor & crown, with named folding/locking langet (H.T.DAWSON R.N.). Full bullion knot is attached. 80cm long, straight nickel blade, shows etching to both sides of fouled anchors, royal crown etc, being in near mint condition. Leather scabbard shows twin brass lockets with hand engraved panels, twin suspension rings, with maker badge to chape for Gieve Matthews & Seagrove Ltd. Overall a near mint example, being 96 cm in length. Commander Sir Hugh Trevor Dawson C.B.E., was born on the 17th January 1893 Died 17th January in Woolwich, London. He was the son of Commander Sir Arthur Trevor Dawson, 1st Baronet Edgewarebury & Louise Grant. His father, himself a long serving Royal Naval Officer, also served as managing director of the armaments giant Vickers from 1906 to 1931 and was scandalised in the latter part of the war for flagrant war profiteering. Served as Midshipman 1911, Sub Lieutenant Dec 1914, Lieutenant 1916, resigned commission 29th April 1919, having served on 6 different ships from 1912-1918. Served during WW2 with the Admiralty, London, from 30th November 1939 until 10th September 1945, with the rank of Commander. He married Vera Annie Lock Halliday in March 1918. Awarded the freedom of the city of London in 1920. He was a Director on the Board of the British Tyre & Rubber Company from 1924 to 1969 & Decca Company from 1945 to 1975. Like his father before him, he was a long serving Club Chairman of the Castaways Club. His Son, Sir Hugh Halliday Trevor Dawson was a Major in the Scots Guards and merchant banker, committing suicide in 1983 by means of plastic bag. He died on the 3rd April 1976 Marylebone, London.
