Description
Description
For sale is a set of medals comprising: 1939 – 45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence and War Medals all period chisel engraved 343754 F/SGT L. HEXT.; Special Constabulary Medal (G.VI.R.) impressed named VICTOR L. HEXT. Court mounted for display with copies of RAF service record extracts.
Flight Sergeant Victor Leslie Hext
was born on 3/7/1901 in Ringwood, Hampshire, England. A watch repairer by trade he enlisted into the Royal Air Force on 19/10/1920 as an Aircraft Hand 2nd Class. After a course at the E and W School he served in various bases in England and was re mustered as an instrument maker. He was posted to M Squadron in Iraq on 19/9/1924. Stationed at the Iraq Airport Depot he served there until being posted to India and the RAF Head Quarters in 1927. He returned to England in 1928 and transferred to the RAF Reserve on 19/10/28. It is probable that he joined the Special Constabulary about this time.
Recalled for WW2 service on 26/8/1939 he served with the Royal Naval Service at HMS Albatross (seaplane carrier) from 3/9/1939 – 1/11/1940.
During this period the Albatross was assigned to Freetown in Western Africa, where she and her aircraft were used for convoy escort, anti-submarine warfare, and air-sea rescue in the Atlantic.
He was posted to 15 O.T.U. Harwell from 3/1/1941 and nothing further has been recorded on his records after this date.
15 OTU was formed in August 1940 as part of No. 6 Group RAF Bomber Command at RAF Harwell to train night bomber crews on the Vickers Wellington.
He died in 1971 at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
