Offered is an original WW1 medal trio to Private Hayes, who served in France with the 24th Battalion Canadian Infantry from the 15/9/1915 – 13/4/1917, being wounded in action with shrapnel to the face at Ypres May 1916.

Martin Hayes was born on the 20/6/1897 in Montreal Canada. He was an electrician by trade and he enlisted on the 3/11/1914 with the 24th Battalion Victoria Rifles. He served with 1 Platoon A Coy. He sailed for England with the Battalion on the 11/5/1915 landing on the 20/5/1915. After training the unit landed in France with Pte Hayes on the 15/9/1915. He was wounded by shrapnel to the face during a heavy German bombardment on the 21/5/1916 but was back on duty on the 29/5/16. He served through the Somme campaign and was transferred to England on compassionate grounds on the 13/4/1917. He remained there for the duration of the war serving with the 1st Q.R.D (1st Quebec Regt Depot) & 23rd Reserve Battalion. He was discharged in Canada on the 13/2/1919 at Montreal. He died 1/2/1953.

The 24th Battalion was with the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division.
